In celebration of 100 years of postal service to 100 Mile House family, friends, neighbors and visitors, Canada Post is recognizing those early mail delivery pioneers and today’s community leaders with a special cancel. The anniversary cancel features evergreens and a stylized stagecoach, which was the means of transportation for people and product before the railway arrived. The cancel is available to anyone who brings or sends their mail to the post office.
Robin Clarke and his post office colleagues, along with their local area manager and superintendent, marked today’s celebration with a cake-cutting and affixing the special cancel on postcards, letters and parcels.
On February 1, 1916, the post office in 100 Mile House was established and J.G. Loud was its first postmaster. For the next 100 years, the postmasters and their assistants were, and continue to be, part of the hub of South Cariboo. Over the years the post office resided in different buildings, and since 1983 it has been located in the heart of 100 Mile House at 425 Birch Street.
